Abstract
The effects of a-tocopherol on the mast cells in the oral mucosa were cytochemically studied in forty mal rats weighing 90 to 120 gm.. Eight groups of 4 each were injected with a-tocopherol(DL-a-tocopherol 10mg. wa dissolved in sesame oil 0.2 ml..) subcutaneously, six groups as a single dose of 0.2m1., 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 24 hour respectively before the rats were sacrificed, and two groups 0.2m1. once daily for 2 and 3 days. respectively Eight groups of 1 each in the control were received only sesame oil 0. 2 ml. and their injecting periods were sane with each experimental groups. The oral mucosa were removed following ether anesthesia. The cytochemical procedures used were modified Mowry¢¥s method for metachromasia, Winker-Schultze¢¥; method `for M-nadi oxidase and Leach¢¥s method for mucoprotein. In these experimental results, it was found that mast cells in the oral mucosa showed intense metachromasiz from 3 hours, and their M-nadi oxidase activity increased at 12 to 24 hours and mucoprotein stain ability at 24 hours, after a-tocopherol injection. So, we thought that a-tocopherol has temporally influence on the chemical composition of the mast cells i the oral mucosa.
